If Christmas is the greatest story ever told then this is the 2nd greatest story ever told and most have never heard it…
First off, I'm grateful for everyone of you (especially those who bring their family weekly to live life at a higher level than the rest) and I'm also grateful for the 17% of subscribers who open and actually read these emails. Hopefully I can continue to provide value for you. I tell my family this story every thanksgiving and believe it should be a story we tell over and over because of the lesson it teaches. Thanksgiving is a story of capitalism. It was a celebration of a bountiful harvest. This bountiful harvest was the fruit of a hard lesson learned… it followed several years of scarcity, starvation, famine, and almost killed all of the early settlers in America. A ship from England landed on Plymouth Rock and brought a boat load (roughly 100 people) of Puritans to this new land… the trip took more than 2 months to get across the Atlantic Ocean... When they arrived, they were very idealistic and decided to all work together to farm and grow food - “for the greater good”. Everyone would work to their best ability and everyone would take equally from the communal harvest pot so no one farmer would/could get more wealthy (have more fruit) than his neighbor. (this was 100's of years before Karl Marx came up with idiodic principle, ‘Each according to their ability, each according to their need’.) The basic principle of communism - do what you can, take what you need. You would think Karl Marx, and all other socialists (Bernie Sanders, AOC, etc), would look at history and realize this type of philosophy doesn't work. And the Pilgrims proved it. Within 18 months there was widespread famine and starvation and over half of the Pilgrims died. Yes, you read that right. More than 50 of the 100 died because of a LACK of food… it wasn't the elements, the flu or covid that killed more than ½ of them… it was not enough food. And the problem was: People did not want to work hard when they don't benefit any more than the person who is a slacker. The hard working people, or better yet, the people with ideas that could radically advance society, decide not to work full capacity because it makes no sense to toil in the fields, take risk to bring your new idea to fruition, and break your back when your neighbor is just sitting around watching Netflix and shooting arrows into the clouds… when the lazy guy gets the same food ration from the communal harvest as the guy who harvested half the food for the community. The pilgrim's excuses were no different than the excuses we hear today… “my back hurts, I'm tired, I didn't sleep good, I have a cold, I'm not feeling good, it's too hard, blah de-flippin-blah…” And it wasn't just the men who had this dis-ease of laziness… it was the women too.. “I'm too tired to cook, my back hurts, I didn't sleep good, I have a cold, I'm not feeling good, it's too much work, blah..de-flippin blah” So no one did anything… because their incentive for their OWN family was not prioritized. They prioritized their neighbor's needs… not their own… and almost killed everyone. BUT before they almost exterminated themselves they decided to try something different: each family would get a portion of the land to farm. Some were better at growing things than others… maybe the land was better in a certain area to grow veggies and other land was more beneficial to raise cattle, one guy couldn't keep animals and food alive if his life depended on it but he was really good at woodworking, so he built houses, tables, furniture, wagons, plows, etc… and they all TRADED with one another. The new rule was: whatever you produced you could eat, consume and use YOURSELF and whatever was left over, you could trade with your neighbor… and suddenly the famine and starvation was over because the pilgrims were incentivized to produce and create and if they had extra, they could help. But they could only HELP if they had a surplus. As the pilgrims began to see they could benefit from the fruits of their own labor, they worked harder, they developed technology and tools to become more efficient… and the surpluses became massive (unlike the deficits our current economy runs on) which then gave birth to… THANKSGIVING. A celebration of surplus. Capitalism gave them the surplus. A surplus to trade and give to their community and a surplus to trade and give to the Native Americans. So, if you're on the fence wondering if taking care of myself and my own 24 inches is worth it? Just look at history. The way humans have been created and hardwired is; we will never work as hard for society as we will ourselves. (This is not selfish… this is the way man was created because I cannot take care of YOU unless I TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.) And there will be no incentive that changes that. Which is why socialism (whether it be for New York city run grocery stores, free housing, education, or healthcare) will never work! Commitment and discipline to working hard, regardless of your ability will always bring fruit. Whether in business, your exercise routine, your diet, your commitment to getting checked weekly, etc.. It is not your neighbors responsibility to put food on your table, pay your bills, or keep you healthy… It is yours. Go work for it. Happy Thanksgiving!
