Elkhorn Chiropractor Helping families and children with Concussions
According to a new study in JAMA Pediatrics, concussions are common in middle and high school girls playing soccer. While CDC numbers indicate 173,286 sports-related brain injuries among children, about 50,000 of these injuries occur in middle and high school soccer players. That's almost a third of childhood traumatic brain injuries, and yet the CDC openly acknowledges that these figures are hard to track so the numbers may be even higher!
However, for anyone familiar with the short-term and long-term repercussions of this injury, the scariest stat is that 58.6% of teenagers who get a concussion continue playing soccer through the symptoms! Many doctors feel that "brain rest" is one of the most important things to do with any athlete suspected of having a concussion. Continuing to play and risk additional injury is dangerous. It's clear that recreational and school athletic teams must do a better job of assessing, monitoring, and protecting these young athletes, but it's also the parent's responsibility to protect their children. If you have kids, we recommend contacting their school and coaches to make sure both are informed about brain injuries and know how to appropriately assess and treat them. Additionally, there is more to be concerned about than just the really scary injuries. Physical trauma in sports is very common, and long-term structural changes to the spine can result in chronic pain and dysfunction. That's why I recommend all children, especially athletes, get checked regularly by a chiropractor to ensure they not only prevent chronic injuries, but also perform at their best! In a recent article from Health.com featured on The Huffington Post, a list of the top ten non-drug options to relieve sinus congestion was featured. I was interested to see the variety of natural options recommended by self-described health experts, but unfortunately, left disappointed.
They included popular options like Neti Pots, humidifiers, and aromatherapy (even listing some of them twice). What amazed me was the inclusion of “Medicated Nasal Spray” and “Over-the-counter Decongestant”. Am I confused or are those both drugs? America has become so numb to pharmaceuticals that they consider non-prescriptive drugs as a natural remedy. These are dangerous, temporary cover-ups that limit your body’s innate ability to heal. Symptoms are intended to rid the body of toxins, bacteria, other nasty stuff. When you suppress coughs and sneezes it keeps that junk inside and slows the healing process. Listen to your body’s innate intelligence and allow it to work. Instead of filling your body with chemicals that suppress its natural function, be proactive and take the steps necessary to improve its ability to heal quickly. I recommend eating fresh fruits and vegetables, exercising daily, having an attitude of gratitude, get plenty of sunshine (increases Vit D), and get adjusted by your Elkhorn chiropractor. Doing so will increase your energy, vitality, and inborn ability to heal. Until next time... Finding relief from Fibromyalgia with Elkhorn Chiropractic
Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Some other problems commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and feet, depression, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its own, or secondary to other musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires a history of at least three months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in a least 11 of 18 tender-point sites. These tender-point sites include fibrous tissue or muscles of the Neck, Shoulders, Chest, Rib Cage, Lower Back, Thighs, Knees, Arms (elbows) and Buttocks. The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing, body-wide pain with defined tender points. Tender points are distinct from trigger points seen in other pain syndromes. (Unlike tender points, trigger points can occur in isolation and represent a source of radiating pain, even in the absence of direct pressure.) Fibromyalgia pain can mimic the pain experienced by people with various types of arthritis. The soft-tissue pain of fibromyalgia is described as deep-aching, radiating, gnawing, shooting or burning, and ranges from mild to severe. Fibromyalgia sufferes tend to waken with body aches and stiffness. Chiropractic care works on relieving pain and symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. But the way you treat your body, the way you care for yourself, you can control that. “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” – Charles R. Swindoll You’re an example. Dr. Chad Schleiger is a wellness chiropractor in Elkhorn, WI. Elkhorn Chiropractors helping with kidney stones.
What if you woke up at 2 am in the morning with a severe cramp in your back about where your kidneys are? Another symptom could be you feel like you have to urinate all of the time but can't when you try. Kidney stones happen commonly in the south since it is easy to get repeatedly dehydrated in this hot dry climate. Florida is also noted for major dehydration and other hot places as well. It can and does happen in any state or country. People do not usually drink near enough water until they are thirsty and by then it's too late for proper hydration. If it is not water they drink, then it is really too late. Nothing cleanses and hydrates like water. Many drink coke or other soft drinks, coffee, tea, sports drinks, which contain enormous amounts of sugar, artificial sweeteners and many additives etc. Soda has phosphorylating substances to buffer the carbonic acid that creates the fizz in soft drinks. Just as the body operates well in the narrow range of body temperature around 98.6, the body pH is also very important. For example, higher or lower temperatures make one not feel well. Three or four degrees higher and you have serious problems and if prolonged can cause death. Let's look at the body's pH level. On this scale, 0 is the most acid, 7 is neutral and 14 is the most alkaline. Your body prefers a slightly alkaline pH level between 7.365 and 7.390. Anything outside this range causes stress and pushes us towards the General Adaptation Syndrome Hans Selye. The farther you go outside this range the more it causes the body's stress to go up exponentially. The distance from the neutral pH value of 7 is not just numeric, it logarithmic. That means each number is exponentially more acidic or alkaline the further you get from 7. A pH reading of 6 is 10 times more acidic than 7, but a pH of 4 is a thousand times more acidic than 7. So a small change in pH makes a huge change in your body. Let's take a look at soft drinks and their acidity. They not only have phosphoric acid but many have citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid as well. pH examples: the pH of Coke is 2.52, Diet Coke is 3.28, Pepsi 2.53 and Dr Pepper is 2.89. Examples of the non-cola drinks are: Mountain Dew is 3.22, Diet Mountain Dew is 3.66, 7 Up is 3.22, Diet 7 Up 3.77 and Squirt is 2.89. The more you drink of these substances the more acid you become. Distilled water and properly prepared reverse osmosis water has a pH of 7. That means your can of cola is tens of thousands of times more acidic than this water. For another example, Battery acid is a 1. If you put baking soda in it, of course it will not work at all because it makes it alkaline and you no longer have the effect you need to start and run your car. It is the same in your body. When you consume highly acidic drinks, it has a huge negative impact on your system. Your body will use its alkaline minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium to neutralize the acid to try to return your pH to normal. Robbing these minerals upsets another balance, the one in your bloodstream. Now this causes enormous problems in your entire health. We teach how to interpret blood tests in our Functional Evaluation Seminars. Phosphoric acid enhances the absorption of carbon dioxide to keep your soda fizzy. This increased amount of incoming phosphorus from soda with zero calcium, causes the calcium levels in the blood to decline. This triggers your body to dissolve calcium from the bones to restore this balance. You almost always dissolve more calcium than is necessary, which can then form kidney stones. The high fructose corn syrup from soda also raises uric acid. If it crystallizes, it forms a different kind of kidney stone. Energy drinks, sports drinks, tea and coffee are not good substitutes either since they are acid forming too. NSAID painkillers and most pharmaceutical drugs are also acid-forming. If you want to prevent kidney stones and a lot of other health problems, drink lots of water to where you need to urinate every hour. We need to consume 3 to 4 quarts per day in most circumstances. Eat lots of vegetables; enzymes and probiotics to assist you with proper alkalization. For more info, Call or email your Elkhorn Chiropractors today! Elkhorn Chiropractors are being put in the public eye of causing stroke...once again...
On September 25, 1987, Getzendanner issued her opinion that the AMA had violated Section 1, but not 2, of the Sherman Act, and that it had engaged in an unlawful conspiracy in restraint of trade "to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession." (Wilk v. American Medical Ass'n, 671 F. Supp. 1465, N.D. Ill. 1987). The American Medical Association lost in the 80's violating anti-trust acts and were convicted of conspiracy against the chiropractic profession... As successful and widespread as chiropractic is becoming, many myths floating around in the general public are being put to rest. Times have definitely changed as chiropractic now moves to the forefront of healthcare. Nevertheless, the fact is that many people still don't understand what chiropractors do and why chiropractic works. Let's clear up a few of the common yet outmoded and limiting myths about chiropractic. Chiropractors are real doctors. Chiropractors are licensed as primary health care providers in every U.S. state and dozens of countries around the world. The chiropractic and medical school curricula are virtually identical, with a few exceptions. Chiropractors actually have more hours of education than their medical counterparts. The chiropractic curriculum also focuses more on treatment of dis-ease in the body, while the medical curriculum focuses on the diagnosis and management of conditions. Chiropractors receive extensive training, combined with many hours of practical work. Just like conventional medical doctors, chiropractors are medical professionals that are subject to the same testing, licensing and monitoring by state and national peer-reviewed boards. Federal and state programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and Workers' Compensations programs cover chiropractic, and all federal agencies accept sick-leave certificates signed by doctors of chiropractic. The biggest difference between chiropractors and medical doctors lies not in their education or diagnostic ability, but in their philosophy and preferred method of treatment. Chiropractic philosophy is centered in the premise that the body is self-healing and self-regulating, as long as there is no interference to the expression of its Innate Intelligence. Medical philosophy is centered in the use of chemicals and surgery to treat the effects of that interference. Consequently, medical doctors are excellent in crisis care. However, chiropractic care is excellent in wellness care and prevention, treating the whole person that has the condition. Chiropractic care is aimed at treating the cause of disease, and not just the symptoms and results of disease. By removing nerve interference through the chiropractic adjustment and providing lifestyle coaching, the body is restored to optimal physiology and homeostasis. Medical doctors and chiropractors can work together. The American Medical Association's opposition to chiropractic was at it's strongest in the 1940s under the leadership of Morris Fishbein. He tried to portray chiropractors as unscientific. Up to the late 1970s and early 1980s, the medical establishment purposely conspired to try to destroy the profession of chiropractic. In fact, in a landmark lawsuit in the 1980s found that the American Medical Association was guilty of conspiracy and was ordered to pay restitution. In the 20 years since, the position of most medical doctors has changed; mostly because of several major studies that showed the superiority of chiropractic in treating a host of conditions, coupled with a better understanding among medical doctors about what chiropractors actually do. Many hospitals across the country now have chiropractors on staff and many chiropractic offices have medical doctors on staff. Chiropractors and medical doctors are now much more comfortable working together in cases where medical care is necessary as an adjunct to chiropractic care. Once you start going to a chiropractor, you'll want to maintain the established good health for the rest of your life. It would be silly to think you could do maintenance on your car just once and expect the car to last very long. Can you imagine doing only one or two oil changes on your car? Yet many people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies! You only get one body is this lifetime. How many cars will you own in your lifetime? More importantly, while you may be able to do replacement parts for your body, there is no replacement part for your nervous system. It has been said that once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going the rest of your life. Well, you don't have to do anything. Health is a choice and a responsibility. It is much like going to a dentist, exercising at a gym or eating a healthier diet, as long as you keep it up, you continue to enjoy the benefits. Many years ago dentists began educating the public to understand that the best time to go to the dentist is before your teeth hurt or develop problems, and that routine dental care will help your teeth remain healthy for a long time. It is important to recognize that, just like your teeth, your spine experiences wear and tear when you walk, drive, sit, lift, sleep and bend. And even faster wear and tear develops if you exercise on a subluxated spine. Regular chiropractic care can help you feel better, move with more freedom, and stay healthier throughout your lifetime. Although you can enjoy great benefits of chiropractic care even if you receive treatment for a short time, the real benefits come into play when you make chiropractic care a lifestyle. Just like exercise or healthy eating. You are more likely to be struck by lightening than you are to have a stroke as a result of a chiropractic adjustment. Strokes are definitely a serious event, no doubt. There are still some uninformed yet well intentioned medical doctors who tell their patients to avoid chiropractic adjustments to the neck due to the risk of stroke. Of course there is a possibility of this happening, but it is less than the possibility of being struck by lightening! On the other hand, you are 70,000 times more likely to suffer a stroke from the daily use of aspirin to prevent heart attacks. You are also 37,000 times more likely to suffer a stroke for some unknown reason than to suffer a stroke from a chiropractic adjustment. When administered by a trained and licensed doctor of chiropractic, adjustments are extremely safe. Elkhorn Chiropractors are highly trained professionals to detect and correct the cause of your discomfort, aches, pains and more... If you or someone you know is struggling with some type of issue don't hesitate to call. Your Elkhorn Chiropractor can help! Whenever we think of “stress” we usually think “anxiety.” But is there such a thing as “good” stress?
Stress is the result of a sudden release of hormones which are activated by our body’s natural “fight or flight” response. This response is triggered when we are about to have a car accident or when we perceive some type of immediate (or imagined) danger. Your adrenaline starts pumping, your heart starts to race, your blood pressure elevates and all your senses are put on alert. The “rush” that you feel helps you to avoid potential danger. It can also sharpen your skills. Do you know anyone who always waits until the last minute to do things? They say things like, “I function better under stress.” What do they mean when they say that? They enjoy the burst of energy they experience when a deadline is fast approaching. They find that same release of hormones to be stimulating when it is put to useful purpose – such as delivering a work report on time. Consider some of the recent research that points to the “positive” influence of stress on the body:
If you are experiencing long-term stress, you’ll want to eat right, get enough sleep, exercise and keep to your regular chiropractic care schedule. Chiropractic helps your body cope with some of the negative effects of stress – to keep you healthy and functioning at your best. So… when you’re stressed out – remember to drop in and see your Chiropractor in Elkhorn! Drug-free pain relief for back and neck pain is possible here at Dr. Chad Schleiger's Elkhorn Chiropractic office. Our chiropractor offers pain management as well as chiropractic care and nutrition services so that you can reduce your pain and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Managing Neck and Back Pain Millions of individuals suffer from chronic neck and back pain, and as a result, they take pain medications to numb the pain. Unfortunately, medications do not treat the source of the pain. Our chiropractor strives to not only reduce your pain through holistic methods, but to prompt your body into healing itself. This is accomplished through the use of chiropractic adjustments as well as other treatments. The adjustments realign the spine into its proper position, which reduces pain by taking the stress and pressure off of the surrounding ligaments and muscles and decompressing and relieving pinched nerves. The Importance of Stretching To maintain joint flexibility, improve posture and to prevent injuries, everyone should stretch on a daily basis. However, it’s important to stretch correctly. Between three to five minutes of mild to moderate activity should be performed prior to stretching to reduce the chances of pulling a muscle. Each pose should be held for between 10 seconds and one minute. Getting Regular Exercise It is also important to get regular exercise. Exercising on a regular basis can help you control your weight or lose weight and maintain your muscles mass and endurance. It also improves heart and lung health and increases energy. For individuals who have chronic neck and back pain, participating in regular cardio and weight lifting exercise routines can reduce pain. When the muscles are strong, they are better able to support the skeletal system, which reduces wear and tear on the neck and back. Are you ready to take your life back, control your pain and start leading an active, healthy lifestyle? Call your Elkhorn Chiropractor today!
