What your pediatrician forgot to tell you...Once your child is born, it is not necessary for the hospital to take your baby to the nursery to be bathed and weighed.
Also, while at the hospital, your baby does not necessarily need:
1. a vitamin K injection.
2. a hepatitis vaccine.
3. eye drops to prevent infection.
4. formula supplementation “just to be sure” in case you can’t produce breast milk.
5. water supplementation if your baby is jaundiced.
Babies who are breastfed are healthier than those who are artificially fed.
Although car seats are critical while your baby is in a car, at all other times your child ought to be held close to your body in a soft carrier rather than being pushed around in a stroller.
It’s healthy and often desirable to sleep with your baby.
Your baby is probably not underweight, no matter what your pediatrician’s growth chart says.
Milk is not an important source of calcium.
Your child’s “misbehavior” may be an indicator of neurologic compromise from some type of trauma (C-section, normal birth process, breech position, in-utero constraint, early childhood falls/slips)
Boys (and girls) who have trouble paying attention should not necessarily be medicated.
Allergies and asthma can be prevented or helped considerably with methods other than medication.
Eczema flare-ups should not be controlled simply by use of steroid creams.
Ear infections can be prevented and are almost always the cause of immobility of the upper neck.
Fever need not be controlled with fever-reducing medication. (Let the fever run it’s course - if fever is greater than 104 degrees for longer than 3 days, get a second opinion).
Most childhood illnesses go away on their own, often faster without medication and provide the child with life-long immunity.
No study has ever been done to prove that children who take the recommended vaccines on schedule are healthier than those who don’t. (The evidence actually suggests exactly the opposite of what we’ve been told over the last 2 decades)
“Natural immunity” lasts a life-time, “synthetic immunity” lasts 8 years, maximum.
Your child should get plenty of time in healthy sunshine.

We all know the old question, "Which came first? The chicken or the egg?"
Just as Adam and Eve preceded their eggs (and hence offspring) so too did the chicken precede it's egg.
But what does this have anything to do with symptoms or dysfunction?
The answer is simple. One has to precede the other. And in this case, and most all other cases, the Dysfunction precedes the symptoms.
Because our bodies are so adaptable, we often manage in spite of a growing problem that keeps nagging us. We may not yet have obvious symptoms, but our capacity to adapt is diminished.
Then, all it takes is a sneeze, tying our shoes or the stress of a deadline to put us over the edge and symptoms appear.
You might say, “But I didn’t do anything!”
Actually, there were probably subtle signs that something was amiss. We all have a different threshold of “body awareness.” Become more aware of your body. Take note of even small changes in your energy level, sleep habits and elimination. Take action while your body is still whispering, rather than waiting until it’s shouting for help!
Call your Elkhorn Chiropractor today and start the road to prevention and wellness. Experience what it feels to be fully adaptive through your nervous system!
You weigh yourself on the scales. You take the temperature of your child. A doctor takes your pulse and measures your blood pressure. These measurements are compared with hundreds of other people from which averages are obtained.
Which begs the question, “Is average normal?”
Averages have a place, but they can distort reality and treat us as if we were mechanisms, like a wristwatch.
Most watches don’t know when you’ve changed time zones. Or that daylight savings time has ended. In other words, your wristwatch doesn’t have the INTELLIGENCE to ADAPT to the environment. But your body does.
That same intelligence that grew and developed you inside your mother’s womb is the same intelligence that lives inside your nervous system today!
The Brain and Nervous System allow us– to think, move, perceive, coordinate…ADAPT!
This is why we shouldn’t see fevers, elevated blood pressure or other such findings as the problem. They’re just signs that the body is ADAPTING to something.
Have you ever went out for a jog and your pulse rate went up?? (I hope it does). Well, you better get on some Statins because that’s not “normal”.
Have you ever walked into a doctor’s office (nervous) and had your blood pressure reading be thru the roof? (white coat syndrome).
Does, 65 year old, Mr. Jones really have heart disease because he is running low on cholesterol lowering medications or is it because his nervous system has lost it’s ability to adapt to his lifestyle over the years?
This is where the problem lies: At the same time the body is giving us a sign that something is changing, modern medicine and pharmaceuticals are telling us that the body is incapable of adapting and we need to cover up our symptoms.
Where Chiropractic sees the body as an ADAPTING creation, modern medicine sees the body as a mechanistic wristwatch that dysfunctions and needs intervention, breaks down easily and needs pieces replaced frequently to work properly.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
Most people automatically think that a fever is something bad that should be lowered as quickly as possible. Not so fast!
It’s important to remember that by itself a fever isn’t an illness. It’s usually a sign of some underlying problem. What’s the problem with your blood pressure going up when you go for a run?
The problem is: Your legs NEED MORE blood and oxygen with an increase in activity! – this is normal – your nervous system perceives your environment (physical stress), and instead of doing nothing and your legs cramping up, your nervous system, tells the heart to kick it up a notch.
So, what’s the problem with a fever? Nothing, really. It’s a natural way the body responds to fight viral and bacterial infections. Rushing in to artificially lower the body’s temperature can actually serve to lengthen the time it takes the body to do the needed work. To tie this in with the example above, if your heart did not pump any faster when you went out for a 5 mile run, it would obviously take much longer to go 5 miles than if your heart was functioning normally.
Most fevers are usually not cause for concern until they reach a temperature of 104 degrees F and only then if the fever lasts for three days or longer. This doesn’t mean you should ignore the fever so keep an eye on it and monitor it.
A fever means the body is in a battle and has “set the thermostat a bit higher,” using temperature to help subdue the enemy.
Which ultimately means: you are ADAPTING NORMALLY! (Healthy)

Elkhorn Chiropractic for Elkhorn Area Kids
By now you have experienced firsthand the benefits of chiropractic care to your health. But what about your children? Have you ever considered bringing them in for a chiropractic checkup?
Surprisingly, the first stress placed on a child’s spinal column is during the birthing process. Equally surprising is the fact that 26% of children surveyed at school reported a history of back pain. A child’s spine is frequently subjected to repeated forces in the process of learning to walk as well as a multitude of childhood mishaps, sports related injuries, and postural strains. Many adults that come to a chiropractor’s office show evidence of childhood in-juries to their spine that are a contributing factor for their pain today. This is why it is important to have your child’s spine checked regularly for any signs of spinal imbalances or misalignments.
Fortunately, chiropractic has had many positive results in treating some very common childhood maladies. Problems like colic, headaches, ear infections, scoliosis, asthma, and even some cases of behavioral problems and bed-wetting have been successfully treated with chiropractic care. In fact, a recent study showed that children under chiropractic care suffered from fewer ear infections than those whose parents sought medical care alone.
Are chiropractic adjustments safe for children?
Absolutely! Because a child’s skeletal system is still developing, there is a great deal of elasticity within the joints. Light pressure is usually all that is needed to adjust a child’s spine. So the next time you come to our office, bring your children. The few minutes you invest in your child’s spinal checkup may save them needless suffering now and in the future.
10 Most Common Reasons Children Visit The Chiropractor:
1. Ear aches
2. Neck Pain
5. Upper Respiratory Infection
6. Low Back Pain
9. Enuresis (bed wetting)
10. Thoracic Pain
The Link Between Your Spine & Digestive Disorders
Everyone at one time or another has experienced the discomfort of bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other digestive disorders, and over $80 billion is spent every year on controlling these symptoms. In some disorders, such as Crohn’s disease, patients often require recurring hospitalization and even surgery. Traditionally, triggers have been thought to be stress, diet or infection, but new research has shown that digestive problems have a strong neurological component.
It’s easy to see why patients with all kinds of digestive and intestinal disorders respond well to adjustments performed by a chiropractor. Every process performed in your body is monitored and controlled by the central nervous system and the network of nerves exiting the spine, and removing the pressure on these nerves caused by spinal misalignments allows for normal transmission of messages to your digestive system.
If you are having digestive issues, you may not think to call an Elkhorn chiropractor first, but a growing body of research suggests that perhaps you should.
What The Research Says
A 2012 study evaluated the clinical effect of spinal manipulation (adjustments) in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) compared with medication. Researchers randomly divided 210 IBS patients into spinal manipulation and medication groups. All patients in the spinal manipulation group received a total of five treatments. Symptoms were evaluated based on bowel symptom scale scores before and after treatment to evaluate the effects of treatment, and to statistically compare both groups.
Post-treatment results showed that of the spinal manipulation treatment group, 92 cases had excellent results, 10 cases had good results, 3 cases had fair results, and 0 cases had poor results. There were no adverse side effects from treatment. In comparison, in the group receiving medication, 30 cases had excellent results, 41 cases had good results, 12 cases had fair results, and 22 cases had poor results.
The researchers concluded that displacement of vertebra in the thoracolumbar spine appears to negatively effect the function of the digestive system. Correcting this misalignment and resolving the abnormal stimuli caused by pressure exerted on the nervous system is, according to the authors of the study, “an effective treatment for IBS”.
Earlier case studies have also shown that treatment by a chiropractor is an effective method for relieving constipation in pediatric patients.
Chiropractic Help For Crohn’s Disease
In another study evaluating the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for patients with Crohn’s disease, 70% of the patients who had battled with chronic digestive problems showed long-term and stable remission of their symptoms without medication after 12 weeks of regular chiropractic care.
The researchers concluded that “chronic nerve compression secondary to vertebral subluxation in the thoracic and lumbar regions had a significant effect on the immune function of these allergy and Crohn’s disease patients.” Furthermore, “this nerve compression leads to a chronic functional disorder having a significant effect on digestion, absorption of nutrients and liquids, conveyance of food as well as various other functions of the digestive tract extending to excretion.”
The Wellness Pointe : Chiropractic Advantage
The bottom line is this: chiropractic care should be strongly considered as a complementary treatment to conventional medical methods of improving bowel function. The health of the spine and nervous system needs be examined along with diet and nutritional habits.

Elkhorn Chiropractor Helping families and children with Concussions
According to a new study in JAMA Pediatrics, concussions are common in middle and high school girls playing soccer. While CDC numbers indicate 173,286 sports-related brain injuries among children, about 50,000 of these injuries occur in middle and high school soccer players. That's almost a third of childhood traumatic brain injuries, and yet the CDC openly acknowledges that these figures are hard to track so the numbers may be even higher!
However, for anyone familiar with the short-term and long-term repercussions of this injury, the scariest stat is that 58.6% of teenagers who get a concussion continue playing soccer through the symptoms! Many doctors feel that "brain rest" is one of the most important things to do with any athlete suspected of having a concussion. Continuing to play and risk additional injury is dangerous.
It's clear that recreational and school athletic teams must do a better job of assessing, monitoring, and protecting these young athletes, but it's also the parent's responsibility to protect their children. If you have kids, we recommend contacting their school and coaches to make sure both are informed about brain injuries and know how to appropriately assess and treat them.
Additionally, there is more to be concerned about than just the really scary injuries. Physical trauma in sports is very common, and long-term structural changes to the spine can result in chronic pain and dysfunction. That's why I recommend all children, especially athletes, get checked regularly by a chiropractor to ensure they not only prevent chronic injuries, but also perform at their best!

Why Should You Care About Your Health?
Sometimes in life we make excuses to not work out, not eat healthy, not get enough sleep, not go to the doctor… but why? Let’s rethink those excuses and focus on why we should care about health and our bodies.
You’re valued. Your loved ones adore you! No matter how many or few, near or far, they cherish you and need you around for a long time.
You deserve health. You deserve to feel your best, to have energy, be happy and move easier. You truly deserve to live the incredible life you’ve been blessed with.
You can. Health is about being better than you used to be. Your fitness is all mental; your body won’t go where your mind doesn’t push it. So push yourself and you’ll be amazed at what you’ll achieve.
You have time. One hour is roughly 4% of your day. So work smarter, not harder and get up early enough to take care of yourself each day for that jog, gym class or stroll around the park. It’s not about having time, it’s about making time.
You’re in charge. There are many aspects of life that are far beyond our reach, out of our control. But the way you treat your body, the way you care for yourself, you can control that. “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” – Charles R. Swindoll
You’re an example. So much about parenting, leading and living is about setting the example. If you want to inspire others to do good, be healthy and enjoy life, then go out there and do the same!
You’ll enjoy it. It’s amazing how much feeling goes into your health. Taking care of you is the gift that keeps on giving. By eating right you’ll feel great, by sleeping enough you’ll feel energetic and through exercise you’ll feel empowered and happy.
In the end, we’re all blessed. Don’t take for granted the opportunity you have to live the most incredible life. We’re here to remind you of this because we value you, we know you deserve it, we know you can and we know your best life is just around the corner!

Elkhorn Chiropractors are being put in the public eye of causing stroke...once again...
On September 25, 1987, Getzendanner issued her opinion that the AMA had violated Section 1, but not 2, of the Sherman Act, and that it had engaged in an unlawful conspiracy in restraint of trade "to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession." (Wilk v. American Medical Ass'n, 671 F. Supp. 1465, N.D. Ill. 1987). The American Medical Association lost in the 80's violating anti-trust acts and were convicted of conspiracy against the chiropractic profession...
As successful and widespread as chiropractic is becoming, many myths floating around in the general public are being put to rest. Times have definitely changed as chiropractic now moves to the forefront of healthcare. Nevertheless, the fact is that many people still don't understand what chiropractors do and why chiropractic works. Let's clear up a few of the common yet outmoded and limiting myths about chiropractic.
Chiropractors are real doctors.
Chiropractors are licensed as primary health care providers in every U.S. state and dozens of countries around the world. The chiropractic and medical school curricula are virtually identical, with a few exceptions. Chiropractors actually have more hours of education than their medical counterparts. The chiropractic curriculum also focuses more on treatment of dis-ease in the body, while the medical curriculum focuses on the diagnosis and management of conditions.
Chiropractors receive extensive training, combined with many hours of practical work. Just like conventional medical doctors, chiropractors are medical professionals that are subject to the same testing, licensing and monitoring by state and national peer-reviewed boards. Federal and state programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and Workers' Compensations programs cover chiropractic, and all federal agencies accept sick-leave certificates signed by doctors of chiropractic.
The biggest difference between chiropractors and medical doctors lies not in their education or diagnostic ability, but in their philosophy and preferred method of treatment. Chiropractic philosophy is centered in the premise that the body is self-healing and self-regulating, as long as there is no interference to the expression of its Innate Intelligence. Medical philosophy is centered in the use of chemicals and surgery to treat the effects of that interference. Consequently, medical doctors are excellent in crisis care. However, chiropractic care is excellent in wellness care and prevention, treating the whole person that has the condition. Chiropractic care is aimed at treating the cause of disease, and not just the symptoms and results of disease. By removing nerve interference through the chiropractic adjustment and providing lifestyle coaching, the body is restored to optimal physiology and homeostasis.
Medical doctors and chiropractors can work together.
The American Medical Association's opposition to chiropractic was at it's strongest in the 1940s under the leadership of Morris Fishbein. He tried to portray chiropractors as unscientific. Up to the late 1970s and early 1980s, the medical establishment purposely conspired to try to destroy the profession of chiropractic. In fact, in a landmark lawsuit in the 1980s found that the American Medical Association was guilty of conspiracy and was ordered to pay restitution.
In the 20 years since, the position of most medical doctors has changed; mostly because of several major studies that showed the superiority of chiropractic in treating a host of conditions, coupled with a better understanding among medical doctors about what chiropractors actually do. Many hospitals across the country now have chiropractors on staff and many chiropractic offices have medical doctors on staff. Chiropractors and medical doctors are now much more comfortable working together in cases where medical care is necessary as an adjunct to chiropractic care.
Once you start going to a chiropractor, you'll want to maintain the established good health for the rest of your life.
It would be silly to think you could do maintenance on your car just once and expect the car to last very long. Can you imagine doing only one or two oil changes on your car? Yet many people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies! You only get one body is this lifetime. How many cars will you own in your lifetime? More importantly, while you may be able to do replacement parts for your body, there is no replacement part for your nervous system. It has been said that once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going the rest of your life. Well, you don't have to do anything. Health is a choice and a responsibility. It is much like going to a dentist, exercising at a gym or eating a healthier diet, as long as you keep it up, you continue to enjoy the benefits.
Many years ago dentists began educating the public to understand that the best time to go to the dentist is before your teeth hurt or develop problems, and that routine dental care will help your teeth remain healthy for a long time. It is important to recognize that, just like your teeth, your spine experiences wear and tear when you walk, drive, sit, lift, sleep and bend. And even faster wear and tear develops if you exercise on a subluxated spine. Regular chiropractic care can help you feel better, move with more freedom, and stay healthier throughout your lifetime. Although you can enjoy great benefits of chiropractic care even if you receive treatment for a short time, the real benefits come into play when you make chiropractic care a lifestyle. Just like exercise or healthy eating.
You are more likely to be struck by lightening than you are to have a stroke as a result of a chiropractic adjustment.
Strokes are definitely a serious event, no doubt. There are still some uninformed yet well intentioned medical doctors who tell their patients to avoid chiropractic adjustments to the neck due to the risk of stroke. Of course there is a possibility of this happening, but it is less than the possibility of being struck by lightening! On the other hand, you are 70,000 times more likely to suffer a stroke from the daily use of aspirin to prevent heart attacks. You are also 37,000 times more likely to suffer a stroke for some unknown reason than to suffer a stroke from a chiropractic adjustment. When administered by a trained and licensed doctor of chiropractic, adjustments are extremely safe.
Elkhorn Chiropractors are highly trained professionals to detect and correct the cause of your discomfort, aches, pains and more... If you or someone you know is struggling with some type of issue don't hesitate to call. Your Elkhorn Chiropractor can help!
