Chiropractic and Ear Infections

12/8/2014

As parents, it makes us feel so helpless. Our child is suffering but there seems little that we can do. No wonder reoccurring ear infections (otitis media) account for a huge number of pediatrician visits.

Movement is essential to ear drainage.  When the upper cervical (neck) spine is subluxated or "stuck" the ears cannot drain properly.

The traditional approaches include:

Antibiotic therapy. This may be effective for acute bacterial infections, but many cases are viral, for which antibiotics are useless.

Tubes in the ears. Surgical implantation of artificial drainage tubes require the administration of a risky anesthesia and then, they often come out!

However, many parents are choosing a more conservative approach:

Chiropractic care. A thorough examination to locate, and adjustments to reduce, nerve disturbances that may make the ears prone to infection.

Our bodies have an incredible capacity to fight infection. When that ability is impaired, it means something else is going on. With our focus on the integrity of the nervous system, we start there.

Nerve Compromise
It surprises many to learn that some of the nerves that control, regulate and monitor the ear begin in the brain stem, continue down the spinal cord and exit out from between the bones of the spinal column.

Changes to the function of the bones in the upper neck may compromise the quality of the nerve signals to and from the brain. Obviously, this can affect the ability of any organ or tissue, in this case your child’s ear, to “defend itself” from infection.

Impaired Drainage
Nerve compromise is often accompanied by abnormal tension to the muscles that support the spine. Besides “protecting” the spine from further compromise, these muscle spasms can exert pressure on nearby lymphatic drainage ducts. This prevents natural drainage, further compounding the problem.

What typically causes nerve interference/tension (Subluxation)?
More often than not, it's because of birth trauma to baby's head and neck that has been left undetected and uncorrected due to C-section delivery, forcep or vacuum extraction, mom was administered pitocin, or delivery was natural but excess force was placed on baby's spine during the process. Other ways include: trips, falls, slips while learning to walk, sit up or crawl.

Getting your child checked for subluxation is an essential part to keeping them growing and developing normally.  Allowing ears, nose and throat to drain efficiently and keeping their immune system functioning at it's best!

Our approach is simple. Since chiropractic care isn’t a treatment for infections of any type, when parents bring their child for us to check, we look specifically for distortions in the upper spine. If nerve tension is detected, we gently reduce it with safe and natural chiropractic adjustments. This helps restore nervous system integrity. For a child or infant, this usually requires little more than a light touch with our fingertip at just the right place and direction.

Parents love our approach. We explain everything in advance. Our adjusting approach is safe and results are achieved naturally.

Why is Subluxation Overlooked?

12/6/2014

  1. A very small percentage of the nervous system is actually dedicated to your sensory ("feeling") experience.  This means that dysfunction of your nervous system occurs frequently without any conscious awareness of it because there is no conscious “feeling” associated with it. Pain and other conditions associated with vertebral subluxation, like other degenerative conditions, come much later in the process while the actual dysfunction occurs early on.  The point is classically illustrated by heart disease… Often the first sign or symptom of heart disease is a heart attack and/or death even though the disease process has been going on for many, many years.
  2. The scientific and healthcare community outside of chiropractic is grossly unaware or have never been trained to detect for subluxation.  While many are unaware and remain in the dark, others are unaware and spread misleading information and malignant criticism of the thing they are ill-prepared to offer any professional or scientific opinion on.  Much of this criticism still comes on the heels of an organized attempt by the American Medical Association (AMA) to destroy the chiropractic profession through the use of slanderous propaganda.  Those actions ultimately resulted in the AMA being found guilty of Anti-Trust violations by the Supreme Court, but not after serious damage was done to the credibility of the chiropractic profession.
  3. Despite a large body of positive chiropractic testimonies and scientific research, there still remains a lack of large-scale research demonstrating the improved quality of life and positive neurological, physiological and psychosocial changes that chiropractors have seen for over one hundred years.  While countless case studies and smaller studies are sufficient to demonstrate a clear benefit and association, we still need more.  At the very least, the current body of knowledge coupled with the awareness of the often severe impact on human life and economics warrants significant attention and funding to address this need.  However this is not the case for 2 primary reasons:
  • For the most part, chiropractic research has to be internally funded.  We rarely receive federal or private funding to advance our research and profession.  The bulk of the world’s research dollars are going to fund new pharmaceuticals.  The truth is that chiropractic has done very well in cost-related studies when compared to other care options. There is no reason for those currently making money off of our sick care system to invest in a natural, cost-effective solution – because it would make them less money.
  • Internal conflict within the chiropractic community has sapped time, energy and resources from pursuing and advancing a research agenda centered around vertebral subluxation. There are chiropractors within the field and in academia who put forth that we should adopt different terminology such as “spinal lesion” or “joint dysfunction” because they believe it will be more readily accepted by the medical community and insurance companies.  The irony is, there is more evidence and scientific support of vertebral subluxation than there are for those other two concepts.
