Injury is an obvious cause for joint pain. However, a less obvious cause for joint pain is inflammation. Millions of Americans suffer from joint pain caused by inflammation and this isn’t triggered by overuse or abuse. The pain is real and yet there is no evidence of a break or damage to a joint such as a hip, elbow, wrist, knee, back, neck, etc. The culprit may be inflammation brought on by diet. Your diet can be causing your joint pain. We are all vulnerable to inflammation which can become chronic unless we understand what causes inflammation and we make choices every day to keep our bodies in balance.
What is inflammation and how can we control inflammation in our bodies? Inflammation is the body’s immune response to an allergen in diet. It is a biological response to try to remove it and heal- specifically with acute inflammation. Through trial and error, you can find what foods trigger your pain and inflammation markers. While there is no definitive diet for arthritis and joint point sufferers since triggers are unique to an individual, there are inflammatory foods that should be avoided or at least limited for a trial and error diet plan. Inflammatory Trigger Foods Fried Foods Processed Foods Sugar Refined Carbohydrates Dairy Products Alcohol Tobacco Salt Preservatives Corn Oil What can we do to counter inflammation? Adding more vegetables and fruits is usually a good diet for most individuals. Keeping your diet as pure and unprocessed as possible will help avoid various health concerns. There are foods with anti-inflammatory content that can be added to diet to see improvement in general health. Anti-Inflammatory Foods Omega-3 fatty acid fish such as salmon, mackeral, tuna & sardines Dark leafy greens Colorful vegetables such as peppers Nuts, particularly almonds and walnuts Tomatoes Ginger and turmeric Garlic and onions Olive Oil Berries Tart cherries – In a 2012 presentation, Oregon Health & Science University researchers suggested that tart cherries have the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food.” Contact Chiropractors in Elkhorn for Joint Pain or any other discomfort you may be battling with. We now find ourselves eating melons and other fruits throughout the year that were once traditionally known as “summer” fruits since produce grown from all over the world is now readily available in our local markets any time of the year.
Yet, watermelon seems to be the epitome of summer as the local harvest peaks during July. This summer, be sure to include watermelon in your diet (in moderation of course) not only for the sheer pleasure of its refreshing and delicious nature but for its incredible benefits. You may be familiar with the list of benefits that watermelon offers but most likely, you may be surprised… so let’s dig in: • L-citrulline, an amino acid in watermelon, seems to protect against muscle pain. • Watermelon works similarly as COX-2 inhibitor drugs as it contains cucurbitacin E or tripterpenoid which blocks the activity of the pain and inflammation-causing enzyme, cyclooxygenase. • New research showed citrulline and arginine supplements derived from watermelon extract lead to significant improvements in blood pressure and cardiac stress in obese study participants. • Watermelon contains more of the antioxidant, lycopene, than fresh tomatoes. • Black watermelon seeds are edible and actually quite healthy. They contain iron, zinc, protein, and fiber. (In case you were wondering, seedless watermelons aren’t genetically modified, as they’re the result of hybridization.) • Watermelon rinds are edible and contain chlorophyll, therefore, very healthy. • Watermelon contains 91% water and is great for keeping you hydrated. Eat Healthy and Get Adjusted Eating healthy foods, maintaining a good weight and getting regular adjustments can be the answer to a happy life for you and all your family. Fibromyalgia is a chronic neurosensory disorder that is marked by widespread musculoskeletal aches, multiple defined tender points, joint stiffness, fatigue and disturbed and nonrestorative sleep. The condition is chronic (ongoing), but pain comes and goes and moves about the body. The most common sites of pain include the neck, back, shoulders, and pelvis, but any body part can be involved. Fibromyalgia patients describe increased sensitivity to pain with such terms as exhausting, miserable, or unbearable. Tender Points may occur at nine bilateral locations clustering around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip, knee, and elbow regions. The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown and often times combined symptoms are misunderstood. At one time fibromyalgia was dismissed by many traditional medical practitioners as a phantom illness. Despite extensive research, no structural pathology has been identified in muscles or other tissues. Abundant evidence now indicates that pain in fibromyalgia reflects abnormal pain processing in the central nervous system. Frustration is often multiplied when not only does one experience tender and trigger points in many areas of the body but also experiences, sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, irritable bladder, “brain fog”, depression and anxiety. This combination of other symptoms/issues may make it difficult to find an effective solution and may make it more difficult to find an accurate diagnosis. Many patients find themselves taking a myriad of medications to combat all different aspects of pain and discomfort associated with this disease. A NATURAL APPROACH Many more sufferers are turning to non-medical approaches for symptom relief including low-impact exercise, acupressure, acupuncture, nutritional and massage therapy. Many are achieving results with Subluxation-based Chiropractic care. This natural approach frees the body from a severe form of stress found in the body called subluxation. Subluxation is a spinal misalignment which causes nerve impingement, inhibiting normal flow and energy transmission specific areas of the body. This distortion of the spine and structural system stresses your brain, spinal cord and central nervous system. Several studies have been successfully documented in which patients with fibromyalgia received improvement after receiving chiropractic care. In one study 23 fibromyalgia sufferers with chronic fatigue syndrome from 11 to 76 years of age received chiropractic care. All 23 patients reported improvement and all of them maintained their improvement after one year of follow-up or more. Every patient reported that they were able to resume their normal activities including full-time work. Brigadier General Becky Halstead served 27 years in the U.S. Army and was the first female general to command troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sharing her experience on how chiropractic care helped her recover from debilitating chronic fibromyalgia, she states, “Chiropractic care provided me with a better quality of life [… ] Traditional medicine did not work for me…doctors of chiropractic not only allow but strongly encourage the patient to be part of the solution for their wellness.” In another study of 15 women with fibromyalgia who began chiropractic care, 60% reported a statistically significant lessening of pain intensity and corresponding improvement in quality of sleep and fatigue level after 15 and 30 treatments. After 30 treatments, these women reported an average lessening of 77.2% lessening in pain intensity and improvement of 63.5% in sleep quality and 74.8% improvement in level of fatigue. ANOTHER CONTRIBUTOR Since accidents cause subluxation, it is no coincidence that many who suffer from fibromyalgia have suffered from trauma or accidents. There is strong evidence supporting an association between trauma and fibromyalgia with one published study 8 showing that adults with neck injuries had greater than a 10-fold increased risk of developing fibromyalgia within one year of their injury, compared with adults with lower extremity fractures. AN ANSWER When free of subluxation, your body is able to communicate freely as nerves are not inhibited in their flow of energy. Everyone with a spine needs a body free of subluxations. If you or a loved one suffers from fibromyalgia or chronic pain, please see a subluxation-based chiropractor today. Can you honestly tell yourself you’ve tried everything if you haven’t tried this? It may make the difference between an improved quality of life and continued suffering. Let your Elkhorn Chiropractors help you get rid of your pain today... for good! Ibuprofen and other drugs are a little gift from heaven when you’re experiencing that killer headache or debilitating back pain. These drugs are available in most households, and we are exposed to them from an early age. The consequences of popping a couple of these pills here and there do not affect us now. Instead, they show up much later in life, when it is too late for us to go back and regret the pills we put into our bodies. They are a “quick and easy fix” way to get rid of pain, but they do not tackle the root of the problem. Long term side effects of taking these pills include liver failure, intestinal damage, and more. Taking these pills becomes a habit for many of us. Instead, research and talk to doctors about why the pain really exists. Is it because of a vitamin D deficiency? Is it something that can be fixed by taking a more natural supplement, like ginger? Is Ibuprofen really helping the pain? These pills aren’t helping our bodies by getting to the root of the problem, so instead of masking why the pain exists, let’s remember the long term side effects that could present by taking these pills.
Crossfit is a sport that has grown tremendously in popularity in the last few years. Crossfit is a fitness program that optimizes ones overall work capacity by using workouts that challenge every aspect of function. Crossfit is well known as constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity.
I have been doing Crossfit for 1 year, and have increasingly realized the importance of proper body mechanics. Furthermore, Crossfit atheletes understand that the proper training and improved performance requires a well rounded balance of intense work, eating clean, and recovery. Recovery should include elements of sleep, rest days, and regular physical care such as mobility, soft tissue work, and chiropractic. Yes, exercising is benefitting your body, but you also need to address the muscles, joints, and nerves that are being used during workouts. Taking proper care of the machine that keeps you moving will allow you to funciton longer and more efficiently. If your body is not balanced, your muscles may not be firing properly, which makes you prone to poor performance and possibly injury. Take for instance your car. Regular maintenance requires oil changes and rotating your tires, so why wouldn’t you take similar care of your body? Chiropractic care balances the body, making sure everything is firing correctly, which improves function inside and outside of the gym. For my patients, I recommend a balance of chiropractic care, massage, staying on top of hydration and eating clean, and adequate sleep for recovery. Chiropractic aligns the spine. Massage helps to balance the muscles and decrease inflammation. Muscle work and mobility help to maintain range of motion. Hydration is critical before and after workouts. Sleep is the best for growth hormones and repair. So do your body a favor and provide a well rounded routine to keep everything tuned up! Visit your Elkhorn Chiropractors today!
If you do not eat foods that are sufficiently high in omega-3 (vegetarians and vegans fall into this category), then you should probably consider a fish oil supplement. But which one? There are many brands and types of fish oil supplements available, but some are better than others. You want to be sure you are getting the best kind of omega-3 fatty acid in the supplement you take, without the risk of ingesting toxic mercury. First, let’s see what makes some omega-3s different from others. There are basically three types of omega-3 fatty acids:ALA, EPA and DHA.
The typical American diet has from 14 to 26 times more omega-6 than omega-3, as it contains foods high in omega-6-rich vegetable oils, meat and processed food. Reducing your intake of omega-6 will help to keep your ratios at a healthier level. The first thing you want to be sure of when looking to buy a fish oil supplement is that it does not contain hazardous metals. Most fish oil supplements are made from small oily fish, such as anchovies, herring and sardines, which do not accumulate the amount of toxins as that of larger fish like salmon and tuna. Nevertheless, you should be sure that the fish oil you buy states that it is molecularly distilled. While it tends to be more expensive than regularly purified fish oil, there are a few advantages. Molecularly distilled fish oil is boiled under high vacuum conditions, which effectively removes all impurities, including mercury, PCB, Dioxins and other heavy metals, leaving only the omega-3 EPA and DHA. It is also more concentrated, so you get more omega-3 per capsule, and it is less prone to oxidation and rancidity, with less of a “fishy” smell. DHA concentration is important too. Many fish oils do not have the DHA component in a high enough concentration to be effective without taking a ridiculous number of capsules every day. You should look for a supplement that has 200-300mg per capsule. And keep in mind that this recommendation is not per serving. Some products advertise themselves as having 400mg per serving, however, if you read the label, a serving is often considered three capsules. If you are low in vitamin A or vitamin D, you may want to consider a molecularly distilled cod liver oil supplement, as it provides these two vitamins along with EPA and DHA. Today’s chiropractor receives a broad education very similar to medical doctors. In fact, it’s quite comparable to the education received by medical practitioners. Often, before acceptance to a five-year chiropractic college, prospective chiropractors must complete a minimum of three years of undergraduate work with a heavy emphasis on the basic sciences. I found some great information about Back Pain that I would like to share. This information came from the American Chiropractic Association. Enjoy!
Although doctors of chiropractic treat more than just back pain, a large percentage of chiropractic patients visit their doctor looking for relief from this pervasive condition. In fact, 70 to 85 percent of all people have back pain at some time in their life. A few interesting facts regarding back pain:
If your back pain is not resolving quickly, visit your doctor of chiropractic. Your pain will often result from mechanical problems that your doctor of chiropractic can address. Many chiropractic patients with relatively long-lasting or recurring back pain feel improvement shortly after starting chiropractic treatment. The relief is often greater after a month of chiropractic treatment than after seeing a family physician The chiropractic approach is to find the cause of the pain and treat it directly. This may involve realigning the spine or extremities by chiropractic adjustments, physiotherapy for the muscles and ligaments, rehabilitative exercises, or a combination of these. Sometimes the doctor of chiropractic will suggest exercises or activities to prevent a reoccurrence of the problem. This may provide a long term solution to the condition through prevention. During the first visit, the doctor of chiropractic will complete a thorough examination that typically includes:
Tips to Prevent Back Pain Some back pain is caused by non-preventable factors (traumatic accidents, congenital defects, tumors), but the majority of low back pain is preventable. Suggestions on how you can prevent back pain include:

This is because chiropractors are knowledgeable about the different physical conditions of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The doctors of chiropractic are able to treat, diagnose and prevent the health issues through hand manipulations and spinal adjustments. During their chiropractic education, classroom learning is complemented with rigorous training of the numerous spinal manipulations. What makes the chiropractic therapy fall under the alternative medicine category is the non-invasive ways in handling the physical disorders of the body.
The main focus of chiropractors is the spine, wherein as long as the spine is healthy then the rest of the body is also healthy. This is because through the research and study of the D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic found out that when the spine is in its normal position, the body would respond accordingly. Instead of just realizing a cure for the deaf janitor who was the first patient of Palmer, other patients who were given adjustments to the spine were able to experience improvement on their health. Thus, the application of these hand therapies will help the body to make use of its innate ability to heal itself. Aside from this, the chiropractor will guide the patient in other aspects of life including proper diet and lifestyle practices. It was then clear that chiropractic is also a holistic approach for a healthier body and overall well-being. In treating bone disorders, the chiropractor will perform the necessary spinal adjustments to prevent the early onset of osteoporosis. Together with the spinal manipulations, the chiropractor will teach the client on relaxation techniques as well as rehabilitative exercises. This will ensure that the client will be able to learn managing the age related condition even at home. As a holistic method, the doctor of chiropractor will also include counseling on proper nutrition and dietary supplements. The dishes that are eaten can also influence the health of the body, thus the client has to be careful in choosing the right kinds of food. For clients that are already experiencing advanced osteoporosis, the chiropractor can help in pain management and handling the condition in a better way. On top of the spinal manipulation, the chiropractor will show the client on bone building exercises to allow the slowdown of the breaking down of the bone structure. Dietary supplements such as calcium and vitamin D will also be recommended to strengthen the bone. Foods rich in calcium and magnesium will be suggested to make sure that the need of this mineral is addressed appropriately. In treating bone disorders, whether prevention of osteoporosis to occur or handling the physical condition, the chiropractor will be able to tailor fit the individualized treatment program according to the needs of the client. Chiropractic care has been welcomed by people who are looking into other ways in dealing with the health conditions. Many are able to go back to their normal lives or even better their quality of life because of the ability of the chiropractors in treating bone disorders. The demand for these chiropractors is also increasing, as people realized that they do have to solely depend on drugs to be healed or to undergo surgeries. With this, chiropractic therapy is one of the best options to achieve a healthy body. Call your Elkhorn Chiropractor if prevention |
